A Period Friendly Bathroom Checklist for Hotels and Vacation Rentals

A thoughtful guest bathroom gives people what they need without requiring a request at the front desk or a message to the host. Alongside towels, soap, and toilet paper, provide a visible wastebasket and a discreet way to dispose of used pads, tampons, and other personal-care products.

For a hotel room, guest suite, or vacation rental, the basic setup is simple: a lined bathroom bin, personal disposal bags within reach, and a clear reminder that the bags and their contents belong in the trash. Add those supplies to the same restocking routine as the rest of your bathroom amenities.

Put a lined wastebasket where guests can find it

Place a wastebasket near the toilet, with enough room to use it comfortably. A covered bin can keep personal waste out of view, provided its lid is easy to operate and the bin fits the space.

Give every guest bathroom its own disposal point. A bin in the kitchen or hallway does not provide the same convenience or privacy. Check that the basket stays visible after towels, luggage, and other guest belongings are in the room.

Choose a liner that fits and leaves the bin opening usable. During servicing, follow your housekeeping procedures for emptying, cleaning, and relining the basket.

Make disposal bags easy to reach

Set personal care disposal bags beside the wastebasket or on a nearby accessible surface. A wall-mounted dispenser can suit shared restrooms or properties that prefer a fixed dispensing point.

Scensibles bags have opaque material and tie handles. Guests open a bag, place the used product inside, tie the handles, and put it in the wastebasket. Never flush the bag or its contents.

Keep the everyday supply visible. Reserve stock can stay in a housekeeping cupboard, but guests should not need to search cabinets for the bags intended for their use. Petite Packs can also be included in a welcome kit; they do not replace the bathroom's wastebasket or regular supply.

Use a short and welcoming instruction

Give guests a practical next step. Suggested wording:

“For personal-care disposal, please use the bags provided. Place used pads, tampons, liners, and wipes inside, tie the handles, and put the bag in the wastebasket. Please flush only toilet paper and human waste. Thank you.”

Place the message near the supplies, where it can be read from the toilet. Match it to your property's tone and use readable type. If guests regularly speak different languages, provide a checked translation.

For rentals with septic systems, the EPA's septic care guidance lists feminine hygiene products among the items that should never be flushed. Link interested guests to our septic disposal guide. Disposal bags go in the trash; they are not a product to put into a septic system.

Include period supplies in the amenity plan

If you provide pads or tampons, place individually wrapped supplies in a clean, easy-to-find location. Pair them with the disposal option rather than leaving guests to work out the next step.

Keep the experience calm and ordinary. Guests should be able to find a product, use the bathroom, and dispose of waste privately. You do not need to explain the amenity in a long house manual or require guests to ask for permission to use it.

Add disposal supplies to the housekeeping checklist

For vacation rentals, check the full setup before every arrival. Hotels can include it in their established housekeeping schedule and refill process.

  • Empty, clean, and reline the wastebasket as required by your procedures.
  • Confirm that the bin is accessible and its lid works.
  • Replenish disposal bags to the property's chosen starting level.
  • Check that guest instructions remain present and readable.
  • Restock any period products and note supplies that need reordering.

Choose a starting stock level for each bathroom, then adjust it using actual consumption and the interval between services. For longer stays, explain how guests can obtain refills and arrange checks appropriate to the property. A single turnover check may not cover the whole stay.

Keep the setup consistent across properties

For several units or rooms, standardize the bag location, sign wording, and housekeeping check. Record which bathrooms use ordinary wastebaskets and which shared facilities need commercial dispensers and compatible receptacle liners.

Start with our vacation rental bathroom guide, or explore commercial solutions for larger hospitality properties. A consistent disposal routine makes a small amenity easier to find and easier for your team to maintain.
